February 2013 BookClub

Thanks everyone who came to the bookclub mtg this month, we had a great turn out. Here is a breakdown of our opinions on the book selections.

Historical:
Waking up with a Rake by Connie Mason & Mia Marlow:

This was a first in a new series. Those of us who read it found it to be a nice light read with good strong characters. Despite the fact that the Rhys’ intention from the beginning was to ruin the Olivia, we still found Rhys to be a likable hero. Rhys is blackmailed into seducing Olivia, to prevent a royal marriage. Olivia is a bit of a tom-boy with a lot of spirit. We rated this book a 7.5 out of 10. We’ll certainly check out the next book in the series by these two authors!

Contemporary:
Taking the Reins by Kat Murray:

This is the first book by author Kat Murray. You could tell it was a first in a series as there was a lot going on to set up the next books. There is a mystery included in the story, but it stays on the periphery and is barely noticeable. Regardless, we enjoyed this contemporary western romance (who can resist a cowboy). Red is a horse trainer and Peyton is part owner and manager of a ranch. Peyton struggles with the bias that a woman should not be running a ranch. She hires Red for his reputation and skill with horses. We see the relationship grow between the two as well as Peyton’s reaction to the return of her brother and sister. We rated the book a 7.5 out of 10. We are looking forward to the second book in the series and seeing how Trace’s story plays out.

Suspense:
Guardians of Stone by Anita Clenney:

Here we have another first in a new series. This is a romantic suspense with paranormal elements. Sadly, we found it has more of a cliff-hanger than an ending. It doesn’t have the traditional romance ending in that Kendall and Jake don’t end happily ever after…at least not yet. Despite that we enjoyed the story and are looking forward to book two, just hoping a few more questions are answered. Rating for this book is 7 out of 10.

Paranormal:
Sealed with a Curse by Cecy Robson

And, just to continue the trend, this is also the first book in a new series. There is a novella regarding the sisters that you may want to checkout. We found this story fun and original. There was a good mix of paranormal myths throughout and the story felt fresh. Celia is a tiger shifter and her hero is a werewolf shifter she meets while working with vampires. Just to keep in interesting, each of Celia’s sisters has a different talent, let alone personality quirks! Looking forward to seeing what happens next with Celia and her sisters. We rated this book 8.7 out of 10.
